Media Arts, Department of Theatre and Film Studies, University of
Port-Harcourt Rivers State, has been carefully reviewed to show the
potency of performance arts (TfD) as a restructuring mechanism for
development. This paper adopts the analytical research method and
the TfD official eye approach. The finding reveals that Theatre for
Development (TfD) is a grass root mobilization and concientization
mechanism for sustainable growth and development esp

Abstract This paper focuses on the very fact that contrary to the negative assertion of some Western
scholars and their African allies, there exist “drama in plenty” in traditional African festival
displays. This undertaken is on the distinct traditional displays in Nigeria albeit Africa and their
classifications, culminating in the origin of traditional African drama. More so, an in-depth
treatment of the above shows the controversies and their resultant effects bedeviling this
concept of “Traditional African Drama”. Furthermore, in an attempt to justify the augments that
traditional African festivals and displays can be adjudged drama, are views alighted by African
scholars of note. While the conclusion is but useful suggestions towards a barnstorming way
out of this academic imbroglio, and a sustainable growth to douse the cocksure conceptions or
aesthetic certainty of the European in the face of the 21

Abstract The thrust of this paper is anchored on the master-craftsman theory of Gordon Craig, found in
one of his treatise entitled “Art of the Theatre” in his discourse, he extolled the imposition of the
theatre director as the creative source of theatrical entertainment. This is with a view that the
concept of creativity, should literarily furnish the artiste that drama is not only for
entertainment but for cultural dynamics, instructions and information aesthetics .To lend
credence to this suppositions are handful of scholarly materials gathered from numerous
printed and virtual sources, reiterating the accomplishment of the director to be a combination
of: foresight, foreknowledge, intuition and a special alchemy composed of colour, sound, movement, line, words silences and an ethos for public taste as he mirrors society. To buttress
this claim are views of renowned directors, scholars and theatre literati who championed the
imposition as a welcomed development

Abstract The thrust of this paper is the Gordon Craig’s theory of the “master-craftsman-director”, which
fully celebrates the imposition of the director as the supreme artiste of the theatre, and by
implication the creative source of theatrical entertainment. This directorial conception posited
by Craig in his treatise “Art of the Theatre”, is richly corroborated by many. To exemplify this
claim, are records of critical comments, and avalanche of directorial assertions by theatre
literati, who divulged that this approach is sacrosanct within the ambit of directing. This inquiry
also traces the origin, development of directing from the ancient through the modern theatre, against the backdrop of modern theatre aesthetics, and finally, gives an appraisal of numerous
contributors and commentators to this theatrical event.
